Designation: CICS System Programmer Job Description and Required
Knowledge:
The CICS for z/OS Systems programmer will have the necessary
qualifications and knowledge to perform the following responsibilities:
1 Manage and maintain multiple CICS z/OS environments on the IBM
mainframe.
2 Ensure that appropriate systems resources are requested for the
relevant CICS environments.
3 Ensure that processor, main storage as well disk resources for the
various CICS for z/OS partitions are reviewed regularly and appropriate
changes are made for necessary adjustments. 4 Ensure that all CICS for
z/OS partitions function with their allocated resources and priorities.
5 Ensure that the production CICS for z/OS system runs at optimum
performance by regularly reviewing reports from Omegamon for CICS and
any other analyzer available. 6 Make necessary changes to the CICS for
z/OS environment to tune the system to run at optimum performance based
on these reports.
7 Provide monthly CICS performance reports to the senior systems
programmer for consolidation of all performance reports and submission
to IT management. EMPLOYER may choose to request these reports more
frequently, perhaps daily during the peak student registration periods.
8 Prepare plans, in consultation with the z/OS systems programmers to
keep the CICS for z/OS environment up to date. IT management must
approve such plans that should follow EMPLOYER’s Change Management
procedures.
9 Participate and provide full cooperation to the proper systems
programming team for major system changes that includes CICS for z/OS.
10 Carry out troubleshooting and debugging using industry best
practices for any problem found in the operation of CICS for z/OS. 11
Participate in any problem determination activities that may not
directly be due to the CICS environment but is likely to involve or
impact CICS. 12 Follow appropriate procedures invoking change
management to make proper changes to resolve the problem. Use
appropriate ITIL based best practices wherever applicable. 13 If the
problem cannot be determined, or if it is determined but cannot be
fixed, follow EMPLOYER’s established procedures to open a ticket with
the appropriate software vendor. Follow up with the vendor until the
problem is resolved.
14 Maintain complete documentation of the CICS for z/OS environments,
showing CICS’s relationships with other products, its versions and
levels. Alert EMPLOYER management of any incompatibilities, with a
recommendation how to resolve the issue.
15 Liaise with relevant software vendor technical specialists for up to
date information on products installed at EMPLOYER. Find tips and ways
how to improve the CICS for z/OS environments. 16 A thorough
understanding of the relevant software vendors’ procedures and
disciplines for software updates, upgrades, patches and temporary
fixes.
Any other activities and responsibilities deemed necessary for proper
and efficient operation of the CICS for z/OS environments and
consequently the overall systems environment.
Preferred Professional Qualifications: Should have completed CICS for
z/OS related systems programming courses such as CICS Internals, CICS
Performance Management and CICS Recovery and Restart, or equivalent.

Designation: CICS System Programmer Experience Required:
The ideal CICS for z/OS Systems Programmer must have at least 5 years
experience as a CICS for z/OS Systems Programmer with a proven track
record.
To be successful in this position, one needs to be team-oriented with a
demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a
deadline driven environment. Excellent interpersonal skills and logical
thinking skills are also important.
One must be able to take the initiative to address issues before they
become problems and seek out solutions that challenge the status quo.
Basic skills required: 1 Data gathering and needs analysis; 2
Analytical skills to analyze issues and problems and recommend suitable
solutions for resolving the problem effectively within an optimum time.
3 Ability to prioritize work schedule to ensure minimum or no impact on
services to users. Since the selected candidate will be working in a
highly computerized environment, a demonstrated experience of word
processing (Word), electronic spreadsheet (Excel), presentation (Power
Point) and electronic mail is required. Competence, but not necessarily
fluency in the English language is a requirement
